Chile`s state oil company Enap and its Ecuadorian equivalent Petroecuador have agreed to evaluate the potential of offshore block 40 in the latter country`s Guayaquil gulf, Enap said in a statement.
According to the deal, the two companies will share information on the block, which is thought to have natural gas potential. Enap has three months to evaluate the data and present a technical and financial plan to explore the block further . Enap then can decide whether it wants to advance on the project.
Chile`s mining minister Santiago González and his Ecuadorian counterpart Galo Chiriboga Zambrano held talks in capital Santiago early in the week while Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa was on a state visit to Chile, Chile`s mining ministry said in a statement.
Any strategic alliance would focus on exploration for new hydrocarbon reserves, according to the statement.
The ministers also proposed increased cooperation on technological development and human resources issues.
