Leftist coalition rejects proposal to debate reform bill

Mexico`s leftist political coalition (FAP) has rejected a proposal to hold a debate for 50 consecutive days on President Felipe Calderón`s energy reform bill, a lower house spokesperson told BNamericas.

The senate`s political coordination board (Jucopo) gave FAP the proposal, which was signed by the ruling PAN as well as PRI and Verde (PVEM) parties.

The proposal was a response to the left`s call to debate the reform during the congressional summer recess, which is scheduled to start in May.

Left-wing politicians have occupied congress since protests broke out last week over reform. FAP has said it will continue to occupy both congressional chambers.

The Jucopo proposal called for the seven-week debate organized by the energy and legislative studies committees to be held in the senate,. Debates would cover reform topic by topic.

The left is opposed to the format outlines for the debate, the spokesperson said.

It is thought Calderón`s reform bill, which is designed to improve state oil company Pemex`s performance, will be harder to pass in Mexico`s fall as the political environment is polarized by 2009 midterm election campaigns.
