Ecuador`s energy ministry and the country`s national police have signed a cooperation agreement to investigate fuel smuggling and theft, the ministry said in a statement.
The national police will oversee a special energy crimes investigative unit - Unidad de Investigaciones de Delitos Energéticos - in coordination with the ministry and recently created energy prosecutors.
The ministry last week signed a deal with the defense ministry whereby the military will help protect state and private oil infrastructure from attacks and theft.
The agreements falls under the government`s energy sovereignty plan launched in April that aims to combat smuggling and recover control of the country`s natural resources.
President Rafael Correa last month submitted a bill to congress that would reform the current hydrocarbons law, aiming to strengthen the regulation of fuel supplies and crack down on smuggling.
