Global greenhouse gas emissions originate primarily from the energy sector, which is responsible for 68% of the total, while agriculture accounts for 11%. In Brazil, the scenario is quite different: energy represents 25% of emissions, while agriculture accounts for 38%. The data were presented by Petrobras’ Executive Director of Exploration and Production, Sylvia Anjos (pictured), during the opening keynote of Sergipe Oil & Gas 2026 (SOG26), held on Wednesday morning (29) at the AM Malls Convention Center in Aracaju.

The event filled the main auditorium, with the presence of authorities, business leaders, and representatives of organizations connected to the sector. The ceremony featured technical presentations, tributes, and the signing of cooperation agreements.

Now in its fifth edition, Sergipe Oil & Gas has established itself as the state’s leading gathering for the oil and gas industry value chain, bringing together approximately 90 exhibiting brands, 15 sponsors, 21 panels, and more than 120 speakers. The program includes a congress, thematic arenas, a business roundtable, technical visits, and discussions focused on the development of the industry.

During the opening ceremony, event co-organizer and BrainMarket co-founder Eduardo Aragon welcomed the participants, highlighting Sergipe Oil & Gas’ strategic role in strengthening the supply chain and generating business opportunities. Next, Carmo Energy Director General Rodrigo Moreto and Eneva External Relations Director Aurélio Amaral addressed the audience, emphasizing the importance of investments in Sergipe and the cooperative environment among companies, public authorities, and research institutions.

In addition to Sylvia Anjos’ opening keynote, the ceremony featured the signing of two Technical Cooperation Agreements aimed at strengthening the natural gas market. The first, signed by the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the Government of Sergipe, and the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP), forms part of the initiatives under the National Pact for the Development of the Natural Gas Market. Those taking part in the signing were Governor Fábio Mitidieri; Senator Laércio Oliveira; the Director of the Natural Gas Department at the Ministry of Mines and Energy, Marcello Gomes Weydt, representing Minister Alexandre Silveira; the State Secretary for Economic Development, Science and Technology, Valmor Barbosa; and ANP Director General Artur Watt Neto.

Next, the second cooperation agreement was signed by the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the ANP, and the Regulatory Agency for Public Services of the State of Sergipe (Agrese), with the aim of promoting regulatory harmonization and driving the sustainable development of the state’s natural gas market.

The ceremony also paid tribute to ANP Director Symone Araújo, who was recognized for her contribution to the development of the oil and gas sector in the state and throughout the country. The commemorative plaque was presented by Márcio Felix, president of the Brazilian Association of Independent Oil and Gas Producers (ABPIP).

Another highlight of the program was the launch of the book Five Years of the Gas Law: Connecting Brazil to the Future, which analyzes the progress made possible by the new legal framework for natural gas. The presentation featured Senator Laércio Oliveira, author of the Gas Law; FGV Energia Executive Director Carlos Otávio Quintella; and Adriano Pires, co-founder of the Brazilian Infrastructure Center (CBIE).

Concluding the ceremony, authorities reinforced Sergipe’s strategic importance for the future of Brazil’s oil and gas industry. The speeches highlighted the new investment cycle expected for the state, driven by Petrobras’ deepwater projects and the expansion of natural gas infrastructure, consolidating Sergipe as one of Brazil’s leading energy development hubs.

Diversified Program

SOG26, which is free of charge, continued in the afternoon with several lectures and panels in the thematic arena, as well as a business roundtable and an exhibition of products and services related to the sector. The event continues through Friday, the 31st.

On Thursday (30/7), the program will focus on the natural gas and fertilizer markets, discussing the sector’s competitiveness in Sergipe. The Innovation Arena will host Energy Startup Day, an initiative aimed at bringing startups and industry closer together. The day will also feature discussions on supply-chain governance, commercial presentations, and technical panels on the decommissioning of platforms in the Northeast.

Concluding the program, on Friday (31/7), technical visits will be held at industrial operations and research centers connected to the sector, including facilities operated by Eneva, TAG, and Carmo Energy, as well as laboratories at UFS and UNIT. The congress will also promote discussions on offshore logistics, pipeline construction, professional training, and talent development for the industry.
