The 20th edition of Rio Oil & Gas ended with a record number of participations: more than 58 thousand visitors during the four days of the event, which had more than 400 exhibitors, gathered in a space of more than 51 thousand m2, in the largest occupation on the Boulevard Olympic since the Rio 2016 Olympics.
In total, there were 268 hours of face-to-face content and 450 online. “We left a very important legacy of knowledge for our sector, in this resumption in the face-to-face format, in an accessible and democratic place”, highlighted Fernanda Delgado, Corporate Executive Director of the Brazilian Institute of Oil and Gas, the IBP, at the closing ceremony of the event.
For the first time, Rio Oil & Gas was held in 6 pavilions of Olympic Boulevard, the location that should host the next edition of the 2024 event, according to Delgado.
At the end of the event, engineer José Formigli received the Leopoldo Miguez Award for his contribution to the Brazilian oil and gas industry. IBP also presented the Plínio Cantanhede Award for the best technical works, in six categories (upstream, mid and downstream, natural gas and energy, digital transformation, ESG and energy transition), among more than 500 entries.
REFINING OPENING
The president of Petrobras, Caio Paes de Andrade, highlighted the role that the company has to contribute in opening up the sector and in the energy transition process. The executive participated virtually in the CEO Talks panel, at Rio Oil & Gas 2022.
“Petrobras wants to move forward along the path of opening up the market, attracting private capital and good governance practices. We have several reasons to be a protagonist in the energy transition that is fundamental for the planet”, highlighted Paes de Andrade.
For Rafael Chaves, director of institutional relations at Petrobras, “sustainability is mandatory at Petrobras and our goals are aligned with the Paris Agreement. We see oil production as sustainable, even more so in combination with other energy sources in our portfolio,” said Chaves.
The fuel market is undergoing a historic change with the recent sale of the first Petrobras refineries and the promotion of free competition in the refining activity in the country.
“The opening of the market brings competitiveness, investments, new agents, creates conditions and market development in a very positive way”, reveals Leonardo Linden, CEO of Ipiranga, who in recent months has invested more than R$1 billion to adjust market demand , logistical capacity and its operational safety.
For Luiz de Mendonça, CEO of Acelen, the operator of the first privatized oil refinery in Brazil, the company has expanded its product portfolio, “creating dynamism and inserting the refinery into a much broader context of international competitiveness”.
The challenges for consolidating this competitive scenario in the sector were discussed in the last edition of the panel Diálogos da Rio Oil & Gas.
GEOPOLITICAL SCENARIO
The global geopolitical scenario has demanded special attention from energy companies. Norway's Equinor, for example, is working to replace Russian gas. “We are focused on opening all valves, accessing all pipelines and switching productions from oil to gas. We are going to deliver 10% more gas this year than in 2021”, reported Eirik Wærness, senior vice president and chief economist at Norwegian Equinor, who participated in the panel “Geopolitical risks, challenges and opportunities for Brazil”, in the last event day.
Robert Johnston, energy specialist at Columbia University (New York), stressed that the scenario offers many opportunities for Brazil, which he sees as a sector leader in bioenergy and critical minerals. “Unlike other countries, Brazil has a plural renewable energy matrix and national oil is lighter and less polluting. We have many opportunities to explore right now”, said Fernanda Delgado, IBP's Corporate Executive Director.
ONSHORE
For Eneva's Exploration and Production Director, Frederico Miranda, the Permanent Supply Cycle by the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) needs to become more frequent and dynamic. “The ANP has played a key role in the development of onshore basins in the country. Exploration is fundamental in this new cycle that we are experiencing”, he said of the panel “The new map of onshore exploration”, this Thursday, at Rio Oil & Gas.
Present on the panel, the COO of Origin Energia, Luna Viana also defended the continuity of offers by the regulatory agency. “We understand that these auctions are of paramount importance to guide the onshore in the coming years.”
According to the CEO of 3R Petroleum, Ricardo Savini, the great opportunity for companies that acquired fields in the Petrobras divestment process is to increase the recovery factor of the wells. The executive participated, alongside Marcelo Magalhães, CEO of PetroRecôncavo, and Caetano Machado, CEO of Mandacaru, in a panel on the resumption of onshore activities at Rio Oil & Gas, this Thursday (29/09).
“We intend to double production. We currently extract an average of 45,000 barrels of production and we want to reach 2026 with around 100,000 barrels per year, more than doubling our capacity,” said Savini.
Caetano Machado pointed out that, although the modality is recovering its breath, it is necessary to make operating costs more flexible to make the wells viable. The use of wind energy as a clean and renewable source has become an ally of the main companies in reducing the emission of greenhouse gases and on the way to the energy transition.
OFFSHORE WIND
The use of wind energy as a clean and renewable source has become an ally of the main companies in reducing the emission of greenhouse gases and on the way to the energy transition. The Business Development Manager of TotalEnergies, Fernanda Scoponi, said during the “Wind Offshore Business” presentation that “Brazil has a vast expanse of coastline, depth of available waters and the strength of the winds for the development of this energy source” .
