Additive to the handling contract at the Porto do Açu terminal provides for the flow of up to 100 million barrels
Press ReleaseAçu Petróleo signed an additive to the contract with Petrobras that plans to double the volume of oil handled in the private terminal of Porto do Açu by the oil company: instead of the 48 million barrels originally planned, the Brazilian state-owned company may drain up to 100 million barrels, maintaining the term of the initial agreement valid until March 2021.
The partnership established in March 2019 has already set records for Petrobras and Açu Petróleo. Currently, the state-owned company is the only company that has its own terminals to carry out export operations. Still, last year, the Porto do Açu Oil Terminal was responsible for 15% of the oil company's movements. In the month of April 2020, despite the effects of the pandemic on the market, Petrobras broke the movement record and Açu Petróleo made 23% of these exports.
“This contract with Petrobras reinforces the fact that the Açu Petróleo Terminal is today one of the best oil export options in Brazil. This occurs for two reasons: the strategic location of Açu, close to the Santos and Campos basins, and the security offered by the terminal for carrying out oil transfer operations, since they are carried out in a sheltered environment, ensuring greater predictability and efficiency. We have one of the best port infrastructures in the national market ”, says Victor Snabaitis Bomfim, CEO of Açu Petróleo.
Altogether, 25% of the oil exported by Brazil is handled by the Porto do Açu Terminal, which already operates for the main companies in the sector that operate in the country, such as Shell, Petrogal, Total, Equinor and Repsol, in addition to Petrobras. Since its inauguration in 2016, Açu Petróle has carried out more than 170 transhipment operations, which represents about 170 million barrels handled. The number of operations almost doubles year on year. In 2019, the company reached the milestone of greatest movement ever carried out in 12 months, since the beginning of its operations: 72 million barrels drained.
The Porto do Açu oil terminal is the only private terminal in the country to do Double Banking (oil transfer in a sheltered area), ensuring safety and sustainability in operations, which are among the main values of Açu Petróleo and Petrobras.
The outlook for the coming years is one of growth. In addition to the transshipment operations, Açu Petróleo plans to build a tanking park and two 40 km pipelines to connect the terminal to Barra do Furado, in Quissamã (RJ), and also to connect Açu to Petrobras' current pipeline network , making it possible to supply crude oil to the Regap (Betim, BH) and Reduc (Duque de Caxias, RJ) refineries.
