T&B Petroleum/Press Office ANP
Approved yesterday, 12/03, by the ANP Collegiate Directorate, the start of the consultation / public hearing process on draft resolution that deals with the specification of a new biofuel to be marketed in national territory. It is green diesel, a renewable fuel for diesel cycle combustion engines, produced from renewable raw materials, such as vegetable and animal fats, sugar cane, alcohol and biomass.
The new fuel will be added to diesel of fossil origin, which currently has mandatory 12% biodiesel, resulting in a ternary mixture, that is, a fuel composed of the three products.
The new biofuel is predominantly made up of paraffinic hydrocarbons, having properties similar to diesel from fossil sources and differs from biodiesel, which is a mixture of fatty acid esters with similar properties.
The proposed regulation is in line with the National Biofuels Policy (RenovaBio), which Law 13.576, of 12/26/2017, aims at expanding the use of biofuels in the Brazilian energy matrix, with a view to energy security , predictability for the competitive participation of various biofuels in the national market and mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions.
The regulation of green diesel could also enable the production and commercialization of aviation biokerosene, already regulated by ANP Resolution No. 778, of 2019, since the production of biofuels in the context of biorefinery generates different bioproducts in the same process.
The initiative is the result of the ANP carrying out an analysis of the regulatory impact brought about by the insertion of this new biofuel in the Brazilian market, as well as studies of the international specifications of green diesel sold internationally. The public consultation period for the proposal will be 45 days.
