Brazilian petrochemical giant Braskem said it has developed a plastic mulch capable of reducing water use by up to 70% in citrus crop production.

Called black and white mulch (MPB), the product is a polyethylene film that stimulates plant growth by maintaining moisture and regulating soil temperature, Braskem said in a statement.

The film's white exterior reflects light while the black underside controls weed growth, according to the São Paulo-based company.

The result of a joint venture with local technology firm Electro Plastic, the mulch is ready for commercial use after two years of laboratory tests.

According to Braskem spokesman Cristiano Rolla, citrus plants had grown 9% higher and 25% wider during trials of the product.

"[It] is an excellent tool to reduce management concerns, promote water savings of up to 70% and assist in plant development," Rolla said.

The mulch will be unveiled at the Feacoop agribusiness fair, being held in Bebedouro, about 400km northwest of São Paulo, from August 5 to 7.
