Reinforcing the positive economic results of the measures implemented by the Brazilian government, the country reached the best job creation numbers in three years in October. Data from the Caged (Register of Employed and Unemployed Persons) released on Monday (20) showed that 76,599 job positions were created in the month.

The country has added 303.2 thousand formal jobs so far in 2017, a stark reversal of the trend from last year (more than 730,000 people had lost their jobs by October last year) and 2015 (786,000 jobs lost), both still reflecting the policies adopted in previous administrations.

This scenario, as the current Caged figures show, has changed. After government actions to facilitate access to credit, reduce interest rates, bring down inflation and reorganise the way businesses do business in Brazil, the country is once again creating jobs and income. In October, all three major branches of the productive sector advanced in the number of people hired.

Areas and locations

The trade sector alone created 37,300 new jobs, the majority of which in retail. The wholesale market also performed well, with 7,100 new positions. Manufacturing ranked second in job creation in the month, with 33,200 jobs (11 of 12 industry segments surveys saw growth in employment). The services sector also showed positive numbers, with 15,900 thousand vacancies in the month.

The data also showed that growth has been widespread, with decreases seen only in five states. The picture also shows strong recovery at the macro level, with job growth in most of the country's geographic regions. The North region added 4,200 jobs in October; the Northeast, 37,800; the Southeast, 13,500; and the South, 21,400. The Midwest was the only region in which the job market retracted, with a decrease of 1,600 jobs.
