Brazil gave its poorest economic performance in this year’s third quarter among the G20 countries, according to information released Thursday (Dec. 12) in a report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
Brazil’s gross domestic product (GDP) fell 0.5% in the year’s third quarter against the previous one.
The OECD reported that this has been the first decline since the first quarter of 2009. According to the organization, it may be partly explained as stemming from the “significant” 1.8% growth in the second quarter.
Minister of Treasury Guido Mantega had already admitted on Dec. 3 that Brazil turned in the worst performance among G20 and Brics countries (the latter being made up of Brazil, Russia, China, India and South Africa) in the third quarter. He argued, however, that the recently revised GDP figures from the second quarter indicate the very opposite, according to which Brazil’s economy showed the most significant increase in both blocs.
Among the G20 countries, France also showed a decline (0.1%). China is the country with the largest growth – 2.2%; its GDP rose 1.9%. In the US, UK and Canada, the GDP growth was estimated at 0.9%, 0.8% and 0.7%, respectively. Mexico grew 0.8%; Italy, in turn, showed stability in its economy.
The GDP of all G20 countries put together reached 0.9% in the third quarter, after the 0.8% increase in the second quarter.
