Brazil industrial output down 1.1%

Brazil industrial output dropped 1.1% in October this year, compared with September. When related to data from October 2015, the fall reached 7.3%, the thirty-second negative rate in this type of comparison.

Data from the Monthly Industrial Survey were released today (Dec. 2) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The year-to-date industry's production reported a drop of 7.7% and of 8.4% for the 12-month period.

From September to October this year, the four major industry economic sectors dropped, including capital goods—machinery and equipment (2.2%). Intermediate goods—partly finished goods, used as inputs in the production of other goods—fell 1.9%. Among consumer goods—those meant for the consumption or final use of consumers—, durable goods dropped 1.2%, while semi-durables and non-durables fell 0.8%.

Of the 24 industrial activities surveyed, production fell between September and October 2016, including food products (3.1%), motor vehicles (4.5%) and rubber and plastics (4.9%).

Only four industrial activities increased their production: oil products and biofuels (1.9%), nonmetallic minerals (1.4%), tobacco products (0.9%) and computer and electronic equipment (2%).
