Brazil’s Corpus Saneamento e Obras, a company that collects, transports and processes solid waste in six municipalities of São Paulo and Vitória (Espírito Santo), has ordered 200 electric trucks to replace part of its diesel-powered fleet from Chinese group BYD (Build Your Dreams), Brazilian newspaper Estado de São Paulo reported.

The first trucks will be imported from the group’s factory in China, but plans are in place for the production of the rest of the order in Brazil, where since 2015 the group has had a factory in Campinas (state of São Paulo) where it produces electric cars.

BYD Brasil sales director Carlos Roma said that the first batch of 21 trucks will be delivered in September, another 60 will arrive in 2019 and the remainder over the next four years, adding that Corpus Saneamento e Obras will have the world’s largest fleet of electric trucks outside of China.

Corpus chief executive Cineas Feijó Valente declined to reveal the amount to be spent on the purchase of the 200 trucks, but said that the market price for each one is 1.5 million reais (US$400,000), which compares with a price between 250,000 and 300,00 for diesel trucks.

Corpus Saneamento e Obras was founded in 1987 by Valente, who is now 87 years old. The company now has a fleet of 400 vehicles, of which 300 are trucks, and employs 8,000 people.
