Memorandum signed by the two companies seeks to encourage nuclear energy as a “green” and safe source in Brazil and Russia.
T&B Petroleum/Press Office MMEEmpresa Brasileira de Participações em Energia Nuclear e Binacional S.A (ENBPar) and the Russian State Corporation of Nuclear Energy (Rosatom) signed, last week (26/09), a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which seeks to promote nuclear energy as a source of “green” energy, safe and inducing socioeconomic growth.
The document was signed at the 66th General Conference of the International Nuclear Energy Agency (IAEA), in Vienna, Austria, and aims to promote mutual cooperation between the two countries in areas and activities related to nuclear energy. “The idea is for us to take advantage of the great experience they have in the nuclear sector, learn about the entire production cycle of this type of energy and be able to apply it in Brazil”, says Ney Zanella, CEO of ENBPar, a state-owned company linked to the Ministry of Mines and Energy. (MMS).
The MOU does not generate financial obligations, it only aligns the expectations of the two companies regarding the use of this type of energy, in addition to reinforcing agendas of bilateral interest.
Among them is the need for clarification of society regarding the benefits of using nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and the development and improvement of fuels from uranium. The MOU will also allow for more dialogue between the two countries on the construction, operation and decommissioning of state-of-the-art, high- and small-capacity nuclear power plants.
Conversations and actions on technology transfer for the formation of a cluster of companies destined to services and supplies for the nuclear sector and, also, operation, repair and modernization of hydroelectric plants will be facilitated from the signing of the memorandum. The document also allows Rosatom and ENBPar to be able to expand the funding to the areas in which they operate.

The Empresa Brasileira de Participações em Energia Nuclear e Binacional S.A (ENBPar) works with clean energy, from the Angra Nuclear Power Plants, through Eletronuclear. It also operates in the generation of hydroelectric energy, through its subsidiary Itaipu Binacional. Soon, ENBPar will start working with mining and manufacturing of nuclear fuel, by Industrias Nucleares do Brasil (INB).
The Russian Enterprise State Nuclear Energy Corporation (Rosatom) is one of the largest global companies in the nuclear sector. It is the 2nd place in the world production of nuclear electricity. Currently, it is also responsible for more than 33% of the electricity in the European part of the country.
