Equinor is one of the signatory companies to the manifesto in defense of the sustainable development agenda and the fight against deforestation in the Amazon, addressed to the Vice President of the Republic and President of the National Council of the Legal Amazon, Hamilton Mourão. The Norwegian company is engaged in this initiative alongside a group of companies and business groups in the industrial, agricultural and services sectors, as well as institutions, including the Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS), of which Equinor is associated . In addition to the Federal Government, the document was also sent to the Federal Supreme Court, the Federal Senate, the Chamber of Deputies and the Attorney General's Office (PGR).

In defending the fight against illegal deforestation in the Amazon and sustainable development, Equinor recognizes that protecting forests is one of the most important tools to combat climate change. "Brazil has huge reserves of oil and gas and high potential for developing renewable energies, such as solar and wind. The country is one of Equinor's three main areas and where we will grow significantly. Our business in Brazil is based on the principles of sustainable development , and this agenda is fundamental to our long-term strategy. ", recalls Paulo Van der Ven, Equinor Brasil's VP of Sustainability.

In the manifest, the signatory companies are available to contribute on topics such as:

· Inflexible and comprehensive fight against illegal deforestation in the Amazon and other Brazilian biomes;

· Social and economic inclusion of local communities to ensure the preservation of forests;

· Minimizing the environmental impact in the use of natural resources, seeking efficiency and productivity in the economic activities derived therefrom;

· Valuing and preserving biodiversity as an integral part of business strategies;

· Adoption of carbon credit trading mechanisms;

· Targeting financing and investments towards a circular and low carbon economy; and

· Incentive packages for the economic recovery from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic conditioned by a circular and low carbon economy.

The document concludes by emphasizing the great potential of resources that Brazil has to move towards a planned and sustainable future.
