The Open Science TV program, a partnership between FAPESP and the Folha de S.Paulo newspaper, presented on May 15, discussed the theme "Bioenergy and other options for Brazil" . During more than 1h30 the advantages of using bioenergy in the country were discussed, highlighting the differentials of this clean and renewable energy.

The subject was debated by the professor of the Institute of Chemistry of USP and coordinator of the FAPESP Program of Bioenergy Research (BIOEN), Glaucia Mendes Souza; the titular professor of the Institute of Natural Resources of the Federal University of Itajubá and consultant of agencies of the United Nations, Luiz Augusto Horta Nogueira; and Professor of the Faculty of Chemical Engineering of the State University of Campinas and coordinator of the Center for Innovation in New Energies (CINE), Rubens Maciel Filho. The mediation of the debate was the responsibility of Alexandra Ozorio de Almeida, editor of the FAPESP Research Journal.

"The massive use of fossil energies - coal before and oil - fueled the first and second industrial revolutions, but in the 1970s the oil crisis eloquently showed that fossil fuel sources were finite and could be depleted in the relatively near future. The search for renewable sources has become the order of the day as an option for sustainable development, "said the Open Science debaters.
