After several months of extinguishing jobs because of the new coronavirus pandemic, the country returned to creating formal jobs in July. According to data released by the General Register of Employed and Unemployed (Caged), of the Ministry of Economy's Secretariat of Work, 131,010 formal jobs were opened in the last month. The indicator measures the difference between hiring and firing.

This was the first time since February that formal employment has grown. In the accumulated result for the year, however, the labor market continues to feel the impact of the pandemic. From January to July, 1,092,578 vacancies were closed, the worst result for the first seven months of the year since the beginning of the historical series, in 2010.

Sectors

In the division by industry, four of the five sectors surveyed created formal jobs in July. The statistics was led by the industry, with the opening of 53,590 jobs. The indicator includes the processing, extraction and other types of industry.

With 41,986 new jobs, construction comes in second place, followed by the trade group, automotive and motorcycle service repair, with 28,383 new jobs. Fourth, comes the group that covers agriculture, livestock, forestry production, fishing and aquaculture, with 23,027 posts.

The only sector to register job closings was services, with the extinction of 15,948 jobs.

Highlights

In the industry, the positive highlight was the manufacturing industry, which hired 53,068 workers more than it dismissed. Second, came the extractive industry, which opened 888 vacancies.

The services had opposite performances according to the industry. The information, communication and financial, real estate, professional and administrative activities segment created 22,208 jobs. The human health and social services sector opened 13,649 vacancies.

In contrast, the accommodation and food sector continues to feel the effects of social isolation and closed 24,949 vacancies. The education segment laid off 19,010 more workers than it hired.

Since April, Caged's statistics do not detail the hiring and firing by commercial segments. The previous historical series separated the wholesale and retail trade data.

Regions

All Brazilian regions created formal jobs in July. The Southeast led the opening of vacancies, with 34,157 more posts, followed by the Northeast with 22,664 posts created and the South with another 20,128 posts. The Midwest opened 14,084 jobs and the North created 13,297 formal jobs last month.

In the division by units of the Federation, 24 units created and three extinguished formal jobs. The greatest positive variations occurred in São Paulo, with the opening of 22,967 service stations; Minas Gerais, 15,843 stations, and Santa Catarina, 10,044 stations. The three states that closed jobs were Rio de Janeiro, -6,658 jobs; Sergipe, -808 posts, and Amapá, -142 posts.
