The president of the Union of the Sugarcane Industry (Unica), Evandro Gussi, said that the entity will take to the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) a "more reasonable" percentage on decarbonization credits emission targets (Cbios) ). In a live promoted on Tuesday by the Brazilian Union of Biodiesel and Bioquerosene (Ubrabio), Gussi criticized the percentage reduction in the emission of Cbios proposed by the MME in a public consultation on the subject that ends next Saturday (4). "I understand that MME was more than conservative in its goals; it was reactionary," he said. He compromised, however, admitting that the proposal is not "arbitrary", but added that he did not see "technical justification for the MME" for the reduction contained in the public consultation. "In order to have a 50% reduction in Cbios emissions, we would have to have two pandemics in 2021," said Gussi.

Annual Cbios emission targets have been cut because of the new coronavirus pandemic. In view of this, MME opened a public consultation on the new proposal, which expects to cut the previous target of 28.7 million Cbios in 2020 in half. The targets for the next nine years were also revised.

Gussi also defended that a program like Renovabio - which regulated the issuance of Cbios - must guarantee predictability to attract investors. "We are comfortable with an adaptation of the program for 2020 (because of the coronavirus pandemic," he said. "But we understand that the cut does not have to reach what was done this year. There are a number that we believe to be more doable", he mentioned , although he did not quote what number it would be. "There may even be a change in the target, but a target that does not negate our main objective, which is decarbonization."

The president of Ubrabio, Juan Diego Ferrés, said in the same live that there would only be conditions to make a numerical review on the Cbios emission targets in 2021. "In the middle of a pandemic, the Cbios emission targets should not be affected", he defended. "Our common sense suggestion indicates that a revision of the targets should only be made after 2022." He also said that it would be an "adventure" to tackle goals that were elaborated in the last five years and published a year ago.
