On the first day of ROG.e 2024, decarbonization was a key topic at MODEC’s booth. The company, in partnership with Shape Digital, presented its commitment to a more sustainable future and discussed how the oil and gas industry is addressing this issue.

Leonardo Santoro, Technical Management Manager at MODEC, highlighted the importance of reaching "Net Zero" by 2050, based on the company's business strategy. He emphasized that decarbonizing FPSOs, significantly reducing the carbon intensity of these vessels, and developing new business ventures will be crucial to achieving this goal.

“In addition to the new, more sustainable units under construction, MODEC is committed to optimizing its existing fleet by implementing improvements and innovative technologies to reduce emissions. By investing in research and development, MODEC is actively working to enhance its operational processes and systems, ensuring that its entire fleet contributes to a cleaner and more responsible future,” said Leonardo, who shared the stage with Júlio Ribeiro, Head of Product Development at Shape Digital.

The two new vessels under construction by MODEC for Brazil’s offshore operations, Bacalhau and Raia, will feature innovative emission-reducing technologies. Chief among them is the Combined Cycle Power Generation System, which will help reduce CO₂ emissions during the operational phase, resulting in emissions approximately 40% lower than those of the gas turbines currently used by the industry.

MODEC Also Discussed Worker Mental Health

The mental health of offshore workers is a top priority for the oil and gas industry. Melina Monteiro, Human Resources Supervisor at MODEC, participated in the panel "Mental Health Pitfalls for Young Professionals" at the Young Summit, a parallel event to ROG.e 2024.

During her presentation, Melina addressed important points related to young professionals, such as respecting personal boundaries, talking about mental health, and building resilience in the corporate environment. These are crucial aspects for addressing the challenges faced by Generation Z.

“It is essential that companies in the offshore oil and gas industry adopt practices that promote mental health, psychological support, and work environments where everyone feels welcomed,” said Melina, who founded MODEC's mental health program, MODEC With You.

The program began as a support channel managed by the company's own psychologists, who provided assistance to employees during the Covid-19 pandemic. More than four years later, the program has grown, with over 30,000 consultations, more than 100 continuous roundtable discussions, as well as the deployment of psychologists on offshore units, workshops, and leadership training to become more empathetic and present regarding issues affecting their teams.
