The UN Global Compact in Brazil has partnered with Petrobras to advance on the 2023 Human Rights Track. The partnership seeks to improve business self-diagnosis on governance and critical human rights issues such as decent work, equality, inclusion, health and safety occupational. The project also includes technical training for companies.

The partnership was announced in Geneva, during the UN Global Compact event at the 11th UN Business and Human Rights Forum, in Switzerland.

With the initiative, many companies will be able to assess their adherence to the main international standards of Human Rights, including the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (POs), which recently completed 10 years.

The result and the measurement of the level of commitment to Human Rights are presented at the end of filling out the questionnaire available in the tool, providing a portrait of maturity at that moment through graphs, percentage of adherence and explanatory texts, to which only the company itself will have access.

The UN Global Compact will have access to the average consolidated results of all participating organizations, which will contribute to the development of a trend report and the creation of a project composed of a track of advances and measures of good practices and guiding principles on the theme. The 2022 edition was filled out by 107 companies, including Petrobras.

Petrobras will also offer, together with the Global Compact, the same tool for part of its suppliers, which will enable gains in scale of the diagnosis and potential improvements in practices in other companies.

“Having Petrobras with the UN Global Compact in this project is essential for us to be able to increasingly better understand the situation in Brazil with regard to Human Rights in companies, increase and improve the performance of initiatives in this area. We have been talking a lot about sustainability in the private sector, but for us to be able to achieve this agenda, we need to act strongly on the S, of the ESG, in fact internalize the guiding principles of the Pact, as well as voluntary initiatives from businesses, sectors and intergovernmental organizations such as the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the International Labor Organization (ILO). The Global Compact has some initiatives in this regard, but the diagnosis is very important for us to move forward and, therefore, the Human Rights Trail is something innovative and decisive”, explains Camila Valverde, Director of Impact and COO of the UN Global Compact in Brazil.

Petrobras, in tune with the challenges presented by society and with market demands related to Human Rights, wants to assume a leading role in this agenda. It assumed national and international commitments, as well as approved internal policies in order to establish an ethical, transparent and committed corporate action with the theme in all its activities. “Through this partnership with the Global Compact, we reinforce our commitment to socially responsible action. We have a work involving our employees, supply chain, partners and communities where we operate, aiming to promote good human rights practices, ethical conduct, respect for diversity, inclusion and prevention of violations of rights”, explains Rafaela Guedes, responsible for the area of corporate social responsibility.

About the UN Global Compact

As a special initiative of the UN Secretary General, the United Nations Global Compact is a call for companies around the world to align their operations and strategies with ten universal principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption.
