In order to expand its range of actions aimed at sustainability, Schlumberger, the largest energy service provider in the world, installed, at the CIO - Integrated Operations Center at its base in Macaé, a solar plant with 1,026 photovoltaic panels of 395 Wp, distributed in an area of 1,972 m² on the roof of the unit.

With the initiative, Schlumberger will promote the annual reduction of 70,790 kg of CO2 from the atmosphere, equivalent to the planting of 2,832 trees.

The system power is 405.27 kWp, which corresponds to 10% of the unit's average consumption. Located at a very favorable point, in terms of solar radiation, the Schlumberger Macaé plant should generate approximately 530,000 kWh annually.

“We seek, through various initiatives, to reduce CO2 emissions and consumption in our operations. The investment in the photovoltaic plant at the base of Macaé has this objective. We are already consumers of clean energy that we buy on the free market, and we decided to make the investment to take advantage of the immense potential of the sun in that region and encourage renewable energy even more”, commented Bruno Alves, general director of SLB in Brazil.

The generation of the photovoltaic plant in Macaé follows the model of self-production of electric energy, aimed at large consumers who are in the free contracting environment and have one or more plants that generate energy for their own business.

In the project developed by Grugeen Consultoria, the choice, at first, was for a smaller generation, through the GRID Zero system, that is, without energy injection into the concessionaire's network, facilitating installation and management.

The investment in renewable energy reinforces Schlumberger's commitment to actions related to the Sustainable Development Goals (ODs), in particular ODs 7 (ensuring access to cheap, reliable, sustainable and renewable energy for all), which sets the goal of increasing the share of renewable energies in the global energy mix by 2030.

Free Market and Energy Efficiency

In addition to the actions at the Macaé base, Schlumberger already buys clean energy in the free market for the Taubaté and OneSubsea bases, which have contracted, respectively, 687 MWh and 176 MWh.

Other actions aimed at energy efficiency at the base of Macaé include charging stations for electric bicycles and replacing 100% of the lighting with LED lamps.

“In addition to reducing our carbon footprint with these actions, we seek to position ourselves as an agent inducing good practices aimed at energy consumption. Our company wants to be equally recognized for the economic, environmental and social impacts it generates on society through our commitment to sustainable development”, said Bruno.

According to Bruno, this is just the first step for the company on the path of self-production of renewable and sustainable electricity. The idea is to expand the current solar photovoltaic system with the installation of new systems in other units.
