Almost a year and a half of pandemic, many lessons learned and many others to learn, we landed in 2021 with an enormous challenge: talking about sustainability in the oil and gas industry. The theme grew and entered the agenda of institutions, companies and a large part of the world population with full force. And for them, we need to give answers and communicate better with them. And by communicating better, we understand that in addition to clarity and objectivity, we also need to inspire and suggest ways of cooperation for the good of industry, humanity and the planet.

We need to bring to companies and professionals new ways of approaching and talking about the theme of sustainability, as communication has jumped to a new dimension of importance in business relationships, and we also need to create a source of reference and information for young professionals who are coming to the market and need a safer and expanded vision of their professional future.

Time for transition and new narratives

The path of the energy transition is bringing enormous challenges for companies. And one of them for sure is communication. How are companies communicating with their most diverse audiences to ensure a positive response and safely move forward on priority agendas?

The new narratives have brought contributions to help us understand the scenario in which we are inserted and analyze what lies ahead, rethinking how we live together in society to build more diverse and equitable futures.

Talking about issues ranging from ensuring people's well-being, attracting and retaining talent, maintaining business sustainability, and preserving the planet, launches companies on a journey to develop their best communication.

Demands for clear, firm and transparent communication have always permeated the industry and now those responses need to be faster. Looking forward with the support of communication can help us to think more structurally and act more correctly in meeting the goals required by all stakeholders.

The companies are working to ensure that they are heard and understood in their actions and also to contribute with models and examples so that this transition occurs with less turbulence and more effectiveness for all involved.

New technologies for ongoing demands in the industry

About 30% of the technologies to ensure decarbonization in the energy sector, responsible for a quarter of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, may be implemented on a commercial scale in the short term, generating convergence with the Paris Agreement targets. This analysis is by Cristina Pinho, corporate executive director of the Brazilian Institute of Oil and Gas (IBP).

Fatih Birol, head of the International Energy Agency (IEA), said that about half of the reductions for nations to reach neutrality by 2050 will need to come from technologies that are not yet ready for the market to consume them. They need to be improved and even developed.

With this in mind, TN Petróleo organized the 1st TN SUMMIT on Sustainability and Communication in the Oil and Gas Industry, which for four days brought together oil companies, suppliers of goods (mainly technological) and services, national and international sector entities, authorities in the energy sector, environmental organizations and universities.

We know that there is still a lot to be done because there are still many challenges to be overcome in moving towards a low-carbon economy and energy transition. And that, in addition to corporate policies, investments in research, development and innovation (RD&I), technologies that will accelerate the digital transformation, it is crucial that there is synergy between all actors and effective communication at each stage, activity, segment, to actually build sustainability.
