Transpetro inaugurated this Thursday (July 17) its second solar power plant, installed at the Belém Terminal (PA), capable of supplying the facility’s entire energy demand. With an investment of R$ 3.2 million, the plant is part of the "More Sustainable Terminal" project, which brings together initiatives aimed at reducing the carbon footprint and protecting the environment, establishing the Pará operation as a sustainability and responsible management benchmark within the Petrobras System.

Transpetro President Sérgio Bacci highlights sustainability as a top priority in strategic decision-making. 

“This is our second terminal to have its entire demand supplied by self-generated solar power. The first was in Guarulhos, São Paulo. Without a doubt, it is a source of pride for Transpetro to be a pioneer in this type of sustainable solution within the Petrobras System, reinforcing our leadership in decarbonizing our operations. This is not an isolated action—at Transpetro, sustainability is always a guiding principle in our decisions because we understand the need to make choices that preserve the planet,” Bacci explained. 

“Launching the More Sustainable Terminal project in Pará, which will host one of the most strategic Climate Summits of recent times, highlights the importance our leadership places on the sustainability of our business and the planet,” the president added.

Belém’s Solar Plant

With an installed capacity of 300 kW, the Belém solar plant can fully meet the terminal's demand, equivalent to the annual consumption of 80 homes. The installation will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30 tons per year and generate savings of R$ 400,000 annually on the unit's electricity bill.

With the inauguration of the Belém Terminal solar plant, Transpetro joins a select group of companies with operational self-generated energy in Pará, particularly in the capital. According to data from the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel), Belém has only 38 industrial enterprises in the distributed micro and mini-generation category—where the energy generated is connected to the national grid.

More Sustainable Terminal: Belém as a Reference in Environmental Practices

Belém Terminal was selected to launch the More Sustainable Terminal project, developed by Transpetro to implement decarbonization and environmental preservation actions at the company’s onshore operational units.

In addition to the newly inaugurated solar plant, the terminal also implemented a rainwater harvesting system with the capacity to reuse up to 3,600 m³ per year.

Another sustainable initiative, set to begin by October this year, involves using rainwater collected from the containment basin of the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) storage spheres. This is expected to save about 1,300 m³ of treated water per year.

These rainwater reuse actions—destined for operational activities—will enable Transpetro to reduce its annual consumption of captured freshwater by over 40%.

According to Márcio Guimarães, Transpetro’s Director of Pipelines and Terminals, this project is a concrete example of the company’s commitment to society and to the positive changes it wants to promote in the world. 

“We took a major step with our first solar plant in Guarulhos, São Paulo, and now we’re fulfilling the promise of decarbonizing operations in Belém. Along with the photovoltaic plant, our More Sustainable Terminal project also aims to reduce freshwater consumption at our facilities by implementing water reuse systems. We want to enhance the management of this vital resource,” he said.

The More Sustainable Terminal project also includes a workforce training program on climate-related topics, enabling employees to act as sustainability ambassadors in their regions by replicating the initiatives locally.
