On Tuesday (15th), the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT) signed an agreement with the American Petroleum Institute (API) authorizing ABNT to incorporate API standards into Brazilian normative documents. The agreement focuses on API Specification Q1, Quality Management System Requirements for Organizations Providing Products for the Petroleum and Natural Gas Industry and API Specification Q2, Quality Management for Service Supply Organizations for the Petroleum and Natural Gas Industry, with potential for future expansion to other API standards.

Founded in 1919, API is internationally renowned for setting standards and guidelines to advance safety and sustainability for the oil and gas industry, widely used by companies in Brazil and around the world.

The agreement, signed by ABNT's Director-General, Ricardo Fragoso, and API’s Senior Vice President of Global Industry Services, Anchal Liddar, strengthens the long-standing cooperation between the two organizations. “Since 2014, ABNT has held a licensing agreement for the sale of API standards. The new development is that we can now use API standards in ABNT documents, meeting the Brazilian market's demand for high-quality content and expanding knowledge in this important industry,” says Fragoso.

“We’re pleased to expand our cooperation with ABNT through the adoption of API standards in Brazil,” said Anchal Liddar, Senior Vice President of Global Industry Services, API. “This agreement allows for wider access to API Standards which will help advance safety and sustainability in this critical energy market.”

Access to this extensive collection of standards allows for a broader set of parameters to be used in technical content development, drawing on documents from an organization with broad international recognition. “This initiative adds further safety and quality to the development of Brazilian Standards,” concludes Ricardo.
