The ANP board approved yesterday (29/6) resolution that establishes rules for quality control and the specification of biomethane from landfills and sewage treatment plants for vehicular use and residential, industrial and commercial facilities to be marketed throughout the national territory. The regulation of the product allows its commercialization and its use as substitute of the natural gas, and the producer must obtain the approval of the quality control of the Agency before beginning the commercialization.
The draft resolution was submitted to the public consultation for 30 days, between 10/4 and 9/5, and the public hearing was held on the 1st. of June.
To reach these regulations, ANP has developed studies to ensure the possibility of replacing natural gas, protecting the environment, equipment integrity and protecting human health. In these studies, the ANP carried out national and international technical visits, participated in technical groups within ABNT and maintained extensive cooperation with the sectors affected by regulation.
With the publication of the Resolution, it is believed that it could be injected, in the short term, into the natural gas distribution network, in an estimated volume of 285 thousand m³ / day. According to projections by the Energy Research Company (EPE), in 2030, it is possible to produce biomethane in the order of 17 million m³ / day.
In addition to developing new economic activity and introducing agents to the market, the resolution will be an important milestone from the environmental point of view.
