For the First Time, a Brazilian Company Specializing in Recruitment and Occupational Psychology for the Oil & Gas and Energy Sector Presents a Paper at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC).
CEPEM (Center for Studies and Research in Psychology and Medicine) brought a pioneering study to the world’s leading offshore industry event, highlighting mental health monitoring and management for offshore professionals through its Pre-Boarding Emotional Check-In program.
The study presents results from an initiative launched in 2020, during the pandemic, which has since evolved into a continuous support and prevention system. The program has been implemented in companies operating in production (FPSOs), drilling (drillships and semisubmersible rigs), and pipeline-laying support vessels (PLSVs), and is capable of identifying signs of emotional strain before they impact team safety and performance.
According to Fernanda Sola, CEO of CEPEM, the primary goal is to reduce operational risks related to mental health while fostering a shift in organizational culture regarding the topic. “The program serves as a strategic bridge between employees and management, offering real-time data and building a database on workers’ emotional well-being.”
The methodology includes proactive, remote contact with psychologists up to two days before boarding, following a structured emotional check-in protocol. This interaction allows for an assessment of the employee’s emotional state and family context, activating internal support or risk management protocols when necessary.
The initiative is fully aligned with the updated Regulatory Standard No. 1 (NR-1), which, as of 2025, explicitly mandates the monitoring of psychosocial risks and mental health in the workplace. “It’s an honor to see this study gain international recognition. More than that, it’s rewarding to witness the industry begin to value the emotional well-being of workers who spend weeks at sea, playing a vital role in the generation of energy and national wealth,” Fernanda emphasized.
With this presentation, CEPEM solidifies its position as a reference in innovative and human-centered practices for the offshore sector, reinforcing the importance of caring for those on the front lines of Brazil’s energy operations.
