The Búzios field, operated by Petrobras, broke its record and surpassed daily production of 900 thousand barrels of oil this past weekend. Located in the pre-salt layer of the Santos Basin, about 180 kilometers off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, Búzios was discovered by Petrobras in 2010 and began operations in 2018. With this new milestone, the field comes closer to the production level of the Tupi field, also in the Santos Basin, and may become Brazil’s largest oil producer as early as 2025.

Búzios has the most productive wells in the country, located more than 2,000 meters deep on the seabed. The thickness of its reservoir is the same height as the Sugarloaf Mountain – and its extension is more than double the size of Guanabara Bay. The field has six production units in operation: the platforms P-74, P-75, P-76, P-77 and the FPSOs Almirante Barroso and Almirante Tamandaré.

“In the first half of this year we brought more wells into production than in the whole of last year, among them wells from Búzios with remarkable results that allowed us to reach yet another record, surpassing the mark of 900 thousand barrels per day. Each record achieved reinforces the correctness of the strategies adopted by the company. Our people have been working hard to increase production while at the same time reducing costs. These are actions aimed at simplifying projects and diversifying suppliers, which have resulted in more oil and gas in more efficient projects. And we are doing all this without forgetting emissions reductions and our commitment to a just energy transition,” emphasized Petrobras President, Magda Chambriard.

“The magnitude of the Búzios field, a giant whose extension corresponds to twice the area of Guanabara Bay, allowed us to surpass this exceptional production level with the entry of the fifth well of the FPSO Almirante Tamandaré. Soon, a new unit, P-78, which is already on its way to Brazil, will begin production in this field,” highlighted Petrobras’ Director of Exploration and Production, Sylvia Anjos.

The Búzios field is operated by Petrobras and has as partners the companies CNOOC and CNPC, in addition to PPSA.
