ContourGlobal LLC, the New York-based power company with projects in 17 countries, agreed to buy a wind farm and stakes in three other wind facilities in Brazil from Casa dos Ventos Energias Renovaveis Ltda. for 180 million reais ($79 million).

The acquisition, which amounts to 122.6 megawatts, includes the Chapada do Piaui III wind farm as well as stakes in Chapada do Piaui I and II and Asa Branca, ContourGlobal said in a statement today. Upon completion, ContourGlobal will own all of the 160-megawatt Asa Branca wind farm and 51 percent of Chapada I and II, it said.

Renewable energy producers are expanding in Brazil’s northeast to tap breezes that currently power 74 percent of the country’s installed capacity for wind energy, according to Sao Paulo-based electricity trading board CCEE. Besides the Asa Branca wind park, ContourGlobal operates two hydroelectric dams in Brazil, with a total of 36 megawatts capacity.

The acquisition of stakes in Chapada I and Asa Branca will be concluded “as soon as we have the approval from the Brazil’s development bank BNDES — Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Economico e Social, which financed both projects,” the company said in the statement. BNDES approved a loan of 320 million reais for the Chapada do Piaui complex, which will have turbines supplied by General Electric Co.

Chapada do Piaui III has a 20-year power purchase agreement.

“This agreement, in general, involves projects in which we had minority stakes and we found it better to sell them and capitalized to invest in our own projects,” Lucas Araripe, director of business development for Casa dos Ventos, said in a phone interview.

Sao Paulo-based Casa dos Ventos didn’t immediately respond to a phone message seeking comment.
