Fulbright Recipient Works in Brazil

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program recently awarded Max Holland (J.D. '13) with a scholarship to participate in the Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships Program. As part of the program, he will work at a teaching university in Brazil to help improve students' English language skills and their knowledge of the United States. He also will enhance the university's curriculum and teach a few classes.

Holland learned about the program from a friend who received a Fulbright grant to perform census work with migrant farmers in El Salvador. He was inspired by the opportunity to contribute to foreign communities in a meaningful way. He also looked forward to spending more time in Brazil.

"I went to Brazil last year with Georgia State Law's study abroad program — I fell in love," Holland says. "The language is beautiful. The culture is so interesting. And, the current geo-political climate is incredible".

To help with the application process, Holland enlisted the help of Cass Brewer, assistant professor of law, Jennifer Chiovaro, instructor of law, and Karen Johnston (J.D. '08), assistant director for the Center for the Comparative Study of Metropolitan Growth. Each professor had a positive impact on Holland's experience at the college and helped enhance his application for the program.

"Professor Brewer is a great teacher, who has an interesting perspective that I wanted to tap into. Karen Johnston has provided me with invaluable assistance and opportunity, and I wanted her to be part of this process," he says. "Professor Chiovaro was my Research, Writing and Advocacy professor, who understands how to write well, and I loved her editing style."

Chivaro thought Holland's proposal to teach English in Brazil as it began preparing for two major world events—the 2016 Olympics and the 2014 FIFA World Cup—was an excellent idea.

"Many students have grand ideas. Max, however, is that rare student who purposefully gained the skills to execute the idea, sought out mentors who could assist him, and ultimately achieved his goal," Chivaro says. "He is an inspiration to all of us, and I'm proud and honored to have played a part in Max obtaining a Fulbright Scholarship. I can only imagine what his next idea will be."

In addition to his work with the university, Holland will develop a full-service English instruction packet, including practical applications, for 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil volunteers.

"Fulbright is an incredibly prestigious program. It is an honor to be able to participate," Holland says. "I'm most looking forward to witnessing the country find its identity and voice in this new global environment."
