One of the most significant conferences held on the afternoon of Wednesday, the 26th, at iBEM 25 took place in the Energy Integration Plenary, focusing on the theme Recycling and Energy – Decommissioning. Every maritime installation, whether a ship or an offshore platform, has a life cycle of approximately 25 to 30 years. At the end of this operational period, these structures undergo removal, dismantling, and decommissioning. The proper disposal and recycling of these large-scale assets was the core challenge discussed in this session.

As a relatively new topic in the field of energy integration processes, the discussion brought together key industry players, including Mário Moura, Director of Enseada Indústria Naval; Elaine Marques, Environmental Port Technician at Codeba Port Authority; Tiago Fiorese, General Manager at ArcelorMittal; and Paulo Cezar, Executive Director of the Bahia Naval Technology Cluster. The session was expertly moderated by Newton Narciso Pereira, Coordinator of the Center for Sustainable Systems Studies.

The debate reinforced the importance of developing efficient and sustainable solutions for maritime asset recycling, addressing both environmental and economic challenges in the decommissioning process.
