The Brazilian Institute of Oil, Gas and Biofuels (IBP) launched its Socio-environmental Responsibility Report on Tuesday (22), a publication that brings together more than 60 initiatives developed by member companies across different areas of activity. The launch featured a roundtable discussion with representatives from Petrobras, Shell, OceanPact and Copa Energia, moderated by journalist Sonia Araripe of Plurale.

In her opening remarks, Dione Oliveira, IBP’s Manager of Member Relations, highlighted the role of the IBP Social Responsibility Committee, which brings together 45 experts from member companies, as well as the importance of giving visibility to initiatives developed by the sector. “It is a great joy to be here today. IBP has several technical committees, including the Social Responsibility Committee, which brings together experts from our member companies. To give greater visibility to these projects, which often remain hidden, and to highlight the value of the impact our companies have on society, we conceived this project,” she said.

During the discussion, Marcela Levigard, Petrobras’ Executive Manager of Social Responsibility, emphasized the development of social responsibility initiatives based on the company’s accumulated experience, with a focus on historically underrepresented groups.

“We looked at all our social responsibility practices and our entire history, because we have been developing projects for many years. We wanted to bring this experience into a program that serves underrepresented groups. We are seeing very interesting results, including people gaining access to the labor market and becoming part of our supplier chain,” she said.

According to Cleusa Araujo, Shell’s Societal Impact and Energy Transition Manager, the industry’s social impact goes beyond voluntary actions and should contribute to the development of skills, autonomy and employability, with special attention to groups that face greater barriers to access and participation. “The social impact generated by this industry goes beyond volunteering. We create this impact through investments and initiatives that develop skills, autonomy and employability, prioritizing groups that face greater barriers to access and participation,” she said.

Letícia Mendes, OceanPact’s Sustainability Manager, highlighted the importance of sharing these initiatives in order to expand connections and strengthen the social responsibility ecosystem.

“Publicizing these initiatives is important so that we can strengthen these actions, build connections, expand their impact and create a stronger ecosystem. I am very happy to be here with this group of women who are truly involved in these social responsibility projects,” she said.

Ellen Laureno, Copa Energia’s Sustainability Manager, addressed the importance of an energy transition that also takes social challenges into account, including the fight against energy poverty and the development of initiatives through dialogue with local communities.

“We understand that the energy transition needs to take place inclusively, connecting business growth with social development. It is necessary to understand the needs of the communities where we operate, maintain active listening and build benefits for these communities in a participatory manner,” she said.

At the end of the discussion, Sonia highlighted the importance of the IBP initiative in strengthening connections between companies and social responsibility programs, giving visibility to the experiences developed by the sector and creating opportunities for collaboration.
