Despite the economic effects attributed to the pandemic of the new coronavirus (covid-19), the average consumption of natural gas in Amazonas, in 2020, reached the best level in 10 years of operation of Cigás. The volume of natural gas demanded, in the last 12 months, reached an average of 4.9 million m³ / day, according to data released by the concessionaire.

This value represents a 6.7% increase compared to the volume sold in 2019, when 4.6 million m³ / day were recorded. In the case of December 2020 only, the registered consumption was 5.1 million m³ / day.

In the accumulated result for the year, the average consumption of natural gas by the industrial segment stood out with an increase of 30% in relation to 2019. The volume sold by the industrial units contracted in the year was 129 thousand m³ / day, which enabled the operation of more 50 companies from the Manaus Industrial Pole (PIM).

The largest demand for natural gas distributed and sold by Cigás, the thermoelectric segment consumed 4.8 million m³ / day in 2020 compared to the 4.5 million m³ / day of the previous year. The increase in consumption by thermoelectric plants located in the capital and inland contributed to the result recorded in 2020. In addition to Manaus, the municipalities of Anamã, Anori, Caapiranga, Coari and Codajás also benefit from the distribution service provided by Cigás.

The annual average volume of natural gas commercialized for the vehicular and commercial segments reached 12.2 thousand and 2.5 thousand cubic meters / day, respectively. Currently, there are more than 140 commercial establishments and three gas stations benefiting from the input, in addition to 4,000 homes.

The growing results achieved by Cigás in terms of the volume of gas sold reflect the work done by the company to ensure, through its own investments, the expansion of the energy infrastructure of Amazonas, on a competitive basis, as well as the universalization of the distribution service and commercialization of natural gas in the state. “As a public service concessionaire, Cigás also ensures the equal treatment and reasonable tariffs for our users”, stresses Cigás' CEO, René Levy Aguiar.

In addition, the natural gas chain has been a driving force for the socioeconomic development of Amazonas through the collection of state taxes. The innumerable applications of natural gas also contribute to the reduction of emissions of gases harmful to the environment and, consequently, to the preservation of the Amazon.
