Petrobras is technologically prepared to adopt fully electrified platforms and, with the amendment to Resolution 382/2006 approved today by the National Environmental Council (Conama), it is able to incorporate all electric technology in its new maritime units. This configuration is more efficient and allows the use of less fuel to generate energy on the platform, with lower emission of both greenhouse gases and other gases, such as NOx. Studies have shown that this configuration allows a reduction of up to 20% in emissions in relation to the configuration currently adopted.

The revision of the resolution meets the request of the oil and gas sector. For discussions on the change to the standard, studies were presented to assess the environmental gains from using the configuration of a plant with greater electrification in oil and gas production platforms. It was found that, compared to the conventional arrangement, emissions of both greenhouse gases and other combustion gases, such as nitrogen oxides, are reduced.

The election also included a study carried out by Professor Paulo Artaxo, from the USP Physics Institute, who performed numerical modeling of pollutant dispersion, showing that there is no impact on the population in Brazilian territory, due to the conditions of emissions and transport of pollutants emitted. Artaxo considers it important to implement initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The change in the resolution approved on Thursday highlighted the applicability of emission limits from the generation of electricity in offshore operations. The change in resolution will enable the centralization of energy generation in a single point of the platforms, in an optimized way, distributing electrical energy to the other equipment.

“The all electric concept is environmentally desirable and relevant to the trajectory of decarbonization and to the fulfillment of the sustainability commitments of Petrobras and of the oil and gas industry as a whole. Having better carbon efficiency also favors the domestic industry, as there is more possibility of offering domestic equipment to replace equipment that is currently imported, and represents greater competitiveness for Brazilian oil and gas in international futures markets”, highlights the Relationship Director Institutional and Sustainability, Roberto Ardenghy (photo).

“The incorporation of all electric technology will bring greater operational efficiency, as well as simplifying the arrangement of the unit, in addition to reducing emissions. With this authorization, we will start a new generation of platforms with more sustainable production”, complements the director of Production Development at Petrobras, João Henrique Rittershaussen.

Petrobras remains committed to the transition to a low-carbon global economy as an ethical and competitive imperative. In recent years, it has been reducing emissions, in line with the commitment of 25% reduction by 2030 compared to 2015. In exploration and production, the company now emits 47% less greenhouse gases per barrel of oil equivalent produced than in 2009. The company seeks to produce affordable energy for society, with a safe, efficient, low-cost operation and with fewer emissions, and recently announced its ambition to achieve neutrality of emissions in activities under its control, within a period compatible with the established by the Paris Agreement.
