The Port of Açu and SISTAC, a leading Brazilian company specializing in inspection, maintenance, and repair of subsea structures for the energy industry, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) this Wednesday (October 29) during the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) Brasil. The agreement aims to study a joint offering of decommissioning services at the port-industrial complex located in São João da Barra, in northern Rio de Janeiro State.

“The partnership is part of the Port of Açu’s strategy to host Brazil’s first sustainable decommissioning hub, covering the stages of temporary mooring—already performed at Açu since 2024—pre-dismantling, and dismantling,” said Vinicius Patel, Port Administration and Services Director at the Port of Açu.

The agreement foresees the potential provision of services for the pre-dismantling phase of offshore platforms and other units, including inspection, maintenance, and repair of structures. Activities may include hull cleaning, chain cutting, pull-out (disconnection and removal of subsea equipment during decommissioning), welding, and plate maintenance.

“Our partnership with the Port of Açu reinforces SISTAC’s commitment to safety, innovation, and operational sustainability, meeting the demands of Brazil’s oil and gas sector,” stated Carlos Madaleno, CEO of SISTAC, highlighting the use of cutting-edge technology and state-of-the-art specialized equipment.

Currently, the Port of Açu has berths capable of simultaneously accommodating up to three platforms for pre-decommissioning activities, with potential expansion to up to ten units.

Among the advantages of the port-industrial complex are its proximity to the Campos Basin, environmental licensing and capacity for biofouling removal (such as sun coral), a unified control center for risk and emergency management, and integration with the existing national scrap logistics network.

Currently, 30 companies are installed in the complex, including world-class clients and partners. With established operations in iron ore, oil, and natural gas, Açu is accelerating its industrialization with a focus on low-carbon projects, reaffirming its position as Brazil’s port of the energy transition.
