Wind turbine manufacturer Suzlon Group has announced it has successfully completed the installation and commissioning of over 350 MW of wind energy in Brazil.

The installation and commissioning work by the company was conducted over a period of 16 months ending in November 2014. The combined capacity includes projects in the high wind states of Rio Grande do Norte and Ceara incorporating 150 units of Suzlon’s S9X wind turbine – the S95 and S97 – and 18 S88 wind turbines. Both variants have a rated capacity of 2.1 MW and were distributed amongst three major clients representing Banks/Financial Institutions/Funds and EPC/Construction Companies in Brazil.

“Brazil is a key geography of our growth strategy” said Mr Tulsi R. Tanti, Suzlon Group Chairman. “Suzlon is committed to contribute to Brazil’s energy basket by reducing its carbon footprint and bridging the country’s power needs.”

Over the years, Suzlon wind turbines distributed among a number of wind farms in Brazil, have delivered the highest capacity factor in the country.

Suzlon machines across various wind farms in Brazil have delivered the highest Capacity Factor in Brazil over the years. According to Operador Nacional do Sistema Electrico (ONS), Brazil’s national grid operator, amongst the top ten Wind Farms for the period Dec 2013 to Nov 2014, the first five slots and the eighth rank has been awarded to the Wind Farms with Suzlon machines.

The three current projects will contribute to reducing Brazil’s carbon footprint by eliminating approximately 0.54 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per-annum with the completed 350MW projects providing power for up to 0.1 million Brazilian households.

In other news, Suzlon Group has also announced the commissioning of Rouar S A’s Wind Energy Farm at Artilleros in Uruguay with a capacity of 65.1 MW. The wind farm is located east of the country’s capital of Montevideo and was inaugurated by the President of Brazil, Ms. Dilma Rousseff and President of Uruguay, Mr. Jose Mujica. The wind farm is the first joint venture between Brazil and Uruguay and is aimed at harnessing wind energy to improve energy security in the country.

Suzlon Group is responsible for complete Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) and life-time service thereon of the wind farm which is located on state-owned land near Tarairas City in Uruguay’s Colonia province. It uses the company’s S95-90 wind turbine model with a rated capacity of 2.1 MW.

Rouar S A is a joint venture set up by Brazilian federal power company Electrobras and Uruguayan partner Administración Nacional de Usinas y Trasmisiones Eléctricas (UTE). Uruguay is aiming to increase its share of renewable energy to 50 percent during 2015 compared to around 40 percent in 2012.

The power generated from the project will be exported to the Uruguay national grid. Construction of the wind farm began in January 2014 and is Electrobras first international investment. UTE is constructing another 468.1 MW of wind energy at six wind farms across Uruguay.

Suzlon entered the Brazilian market in 2008 and has since created a cumulative installed capacity of approximately 750 MW.
