In line with the Fuel of the Future Law — which established the National Decarbonization Program for Natural Gas Producers and Importers and the Biomethane Incentive Program — Transportadora Brasileira Gasoduto Bolívia-Brasil S.A. (TBG) is actively promoting the injection of biomethane into the gas transport system. To this end, the company has developed the Advanced Conceptual Engineering Project for the Biomethane Hub, which can be modular and replicated according to market demand, and submitted its Biomethane Connection Agreement for approval by ANP (Brazil’s National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels). TBG’s business model for biomethane injection is based on international best practices, dialogue with the market, and adaptation to Brazil’s current regulatory framework.

Located in a region with high biomethane potential — particularly due to nearby sugar and ethanol plants and other producers along its pipeline network — TBG designed the Biomethane Hub to optimize connection between producers and the Gas Transport System. The project allows phased construction and flexible supply logistics, including delivery via dedicated pipelines or road transport (compressed or liquefied natural gas trucks). The final size of the hub will depend on market demand, TBG’s internal analysis, and dialogue with the regulator.

Following Petrobras’ Biomethane Procurement Call, several producers reached out to TBG to learn more about the Hub and how to connect to the system. Biomethane-producing facilities have been identified in all five states crossed by the GASBOL pipeline, especially São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul. These projects have a combined estimated potential of approximately 3 million cubic meters per day, confirming strong interest and offering a foundation for planning the hubs.

Connecting to the national Gas Transport System enables biomethane producers to reach consumers across the pipeline network, unlocking new business opportunities. This is particularly relevant under the Fuel of the Future Law, which requires a 1% share of biomethane in natural gas operations starting in 2026, increasing progressively to 10%.

According to TBG’s Commercial Director, Jorge Hijjar (picture), the goal is for TBG to act as a biomethane aggregator by creating hubs that connect producers who may not have the scale to access the network on their own. “TBG’s Biomethane Hub plays a crucial role in the energy transition and in adding a new supply source. We also benefit from a competitive advantage due to our privileged location near Brazil’s agricultural heartland in the Central-South region. We are ready to serve any point in our pipeline network. The transport system is essential for scaling up production and market reach,” said Hijjar.

TBG is also positioned to support the National Integrated Plan for Natural Gas and Biomethane Infrastructure (PNIIGB), led by the Energy Research Office (EPE), which launched a public consultation on its methodological guidelines on March 19. The plan aims to develop a comprehensive strategy for the supply, demand, and infrastructure for natural gas and biomethane in Brazil. With this, TBG can play a key role in scaling up the market and facilitating transactions between producers and consumers across its pipeline system.

Produced from organic waste, biomethane is fully interchangeable with natural gas across residential, commercial, industrial, and vehicle fueling applications — areas in which TBG is already active in the states of Mato Grosso do Sul, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul.
