The Offshore Frontier Solution Pte Ltd in Singapore – a joint venture between MODEC and Toyo Engineering Corporation – has awarded ABB the contract to provide a complete electrical system and associated digital solutions on a Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) vessel for ExxonMobil in the South American Uaru oil field.

The offshore FPSO, named Errea Wittu, will operate approximately 200 kilometers off the coast of Guyana. This marks ExxonMobil's fifth FPSO in Guyana, combining the development of Snoek, Mako, and Uaru resources in the Stabroek block. Expected to start operations by 2026 with an initial production capacity of 250,000 barrels of oil per day, the vessel will also have an associated gas treatment capacity of 540 million standard cubic feet per day.

ABB will provide a surface and hull electrical system for the vessel through a modular substation, the pre-built ABB eHouse. The system reduces exposure to risks and costs by commissioning, installing, and testing all electrical systems at the shipyard before offshore deployment, allowing for a faster time to market. Additionally, the company will deliver energy management solutions to optimize the energy efficiency and availability of assets for all provided electrical equipment.

The order, recorded in the second quarter of 2023, marks the fourteenth collaboration between ABB and the engineering, procurement, and construction company MODEC in FPSO developments in South America.

The global FPSO market is estimated to reach $20 billion by 2027, according to a report by The Insight Partners. Guyana ranks second only to Brazil in the number of new FPSO projects scheduled to start operations and, according to Rystad Energy, is expected to produce 1.7 million barrels of oil per day by 2035, making it the fourth-largest offshore oil producer in the world.

"The FPSO market in South America is growing exponentially, driven by the fact that floating platforms are a more economical, faster, mobile, and sustainable solution compared to traditional platforms," stated Brandon Spencer, President of ABB Energy Industries. "Guyana is at the forefront of this growth, and we are excited to contribute our technology to help bring this fifth development by ExxonMobil in Guyana to market quickly and efficiently. As a result, the country is already seeing benefits to its GDP, with the government announcing significant investments in the health, education, and critical infrastructure sectors."

ABB's Energy Transition Equation report for the offshore oil and gas sector provides insights into how FPSO operators can reduce carbon emissions by up to 320,000 tons per site each year through the application of electrification, automation, and digital technologies, enabling a shift to minimal crew operations.
