Brazil's stand at the 27th United Nations Conference on Climate Change, COP27, held in Sharm El-Sheik, Egypt, was officially opened on Tuesday (8.11).
The opening was attended by the Federal Government, the Minister of the Environment, Joaquim Leite, through videoconference. The program also had the participation, directly from Brazil, of the Minister of Education, Victor Godoy, and the Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Economy, Marcelo Guaranys. The Brazilian stand will work until the end of COP 27, on November 18th.
"We are here to show a real Brazil. A Brazil of green energies, which involves sustainable agriculture, a low carbon industry, green entrepreneurship, and nothing better than being together with the private sector to scale this new green economy ", said Minister Joaquim Leite, referring to Brazil's supporters at COP 27.
The Brazilian stand in Sharm El-Sheik has the support of the National Confederation of Industry (CNI), the Brazilian Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock (CNA), the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil) and the Brazilian Support for Micro and Small Enterprises (SEBRAE).
The official opening ceremony was marked by the first day of panels and one of the main themes was the Integration of Brazil in the Global Carbon Market. Presented by the National Secretary for the Amazon at the Ministry of the Environment, Marcelo Freire, the debate was attended by the representative of the Ministry of the Environment of Japan, Maiko Uga, and the superintendent of the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), Fabio Ribeiro, in addition to the president of the New Development Bank (NDB), the Brazilian Marcos Troyjo, and representatives of companies linked to the carbon market.
"We have to accelerate actions. When we think about 2030, it may seem that it is far away, but it is not. There are many countries interested in the carbon market and Japan is one of them. We are very excited to join Brazil in this international market for carbon credits. carbon," said Maiko Uga, a representative of Japan's Ministry of the Environment.
Global auction and public call
As it has one of the cleanest energy matrices in the world, with 84% of its electricity matrix coming from renewable sources, against an average of 28% for the rest of the planet, Brazil has the potential to become one of the main players in the global energy market. carbon credit.
This is a reality that is already underway in the country and the proof of this was Brazil's role in the world's largest auction of carbon credits from the voluntary market, held in the last week of October in Saudi Arabia.
The auction was attended by more than 15 countries that offered credits. Of the 1.4 million tons of carbon credits traded, 250,000 tons, the largest volume in the negotiations, were from Brazil.
In his presentation, Fabio Ribeiro highlighted the BNDES' performance in the development and strengthening of the carbon credit market in Brazil and recalled that the bank has already carried out two Call Notices for the Acquisition of Carbon Credits in the Voluntary Market. The first, in May, was a pilot operation worth up to R$10 million. The second, at the end of August, was worth R$ 100 million. The first call had a project demand of R$ 20 million. In the second, the demand was R$ 500 million.
Another example of Brazilian potential was presented by Eduardo Bastos, one of the speakers and representative of the largest meat exporter in Latin America. According to him, in July this year, Brazil exported, for the first time in the world, a batch of meat with zero carbon footprint.
"All the emissions in the chain, from pasture to arrival at a steakhouse in Germany, were neutralized in the process. The reception of this product was incredible. Acceptance was high and, since then, we have exported the product to more than 15 customers in markets in Asia, Europe and the United States", detailed Eduardo Bastos.
Other panels
In total, the first day of programming for Brazil's stand at COP27 featured six panels. In addition to the carbon market, the Green Future in Urban Mobility, Governance as an Instrument for Accelerating Sustainable Development in Public Management, Improvement of the National Inventory of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Removals (GHG), the Capital Market and Ativos Ambientais and the Escola +Verdes Project, which had the participation of the minister of education, Victor Godoy.
"We know the importance of bringing environmental education into schools," said the Minister of Education, who presented the Escola +Verdes Project alongside Minister Joaquim Leite. Together, they showed the success stories of schools that received biodigesters, devices that transform organic waste into biogas and liquid fertilizers, and that serve as a clear and didactic example for students to learn environmental concepts, such as the importance of recycling.
In addition to the area dedicated to the panels, the Brazil stand in Sharm El-Sheik also has the SEBRAE Entrepreneur Stage, also inaugurated this Tuesday, where successful cases of startups linked to the green economy are presented.
Brazil's stand at COP27 has already been visited by representatives of several foreign delegations
