The director of Institutional Relations and Sustainability at Petrobras, Rafael Chaves (photo), participated in the panel “Can This Energy Transition Be a Revolution?” at CERAWeek, in Houston (USA), this Wednesday, 08/03. The event, which is one of the main ones in the energy industry in the world, brings together representatives of companies, research institutes, universities, governments and other sectors linked to the energy area, with the objective of debating new ideas and challenges in the sector.

In the panel, dedicated to discussions on strategies for the energy transition, Chaves highlighted the importance of the oil and gas sector in a scenario of gradual transition, reinforcing that the energy transition needs to be fair, guaranteeing clean, accessible and cheap energy for all.

Chaves cited Petrobras actions to decarbonize its operations, highlighting the production of oil with low carbon emissions in the pre-salt layer; research and development of patented technological solutions, such as HiSep; and the development of products with lower emissions (scope 3), such as Diesel R, with renewable content, and aviation biokerosene (BioQav).

The director also mentioned the importance of partnerships for the energy transition, which must take into account solutions based on nature.

Through the Petrobras Socio-environmental Program, in the Forestry line, Petrobras already supports 21 projects aimed at mitigating climate change, covering the equivalent of 3% of the Brazilian territory in areas conserved or recovered in partnership with civil society organizations.

Recently, Petrobras launched a public notice worth BRL 432 million for socio-environmental projects, a record amount for public selections of this type. It also invests, in partnership with the BNDES, in the Floresta Viva initiative, matchfunding aimed at biological restoration in Brazilian biomes – the first notice, launched at the end of 2022, supports mangrove recovery projects.
