Two public workshops to discuss the Voluntary Confidential Near-Miss Reporting System are scheduled by the US Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) and the US Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
The first workshop is scheduled for Los Angeles on April 22 and in Houston on April 24. The stated purpose of the meetings is to “give the offshore oil and gas industry, other stakeholders and the public an opportunity to discuss the Voluntary Confidential Near-Miss Reporting System and contribute to the development of the system.”
"The Voluntary Confidential Near-Miss Reporting System has the potential to help prevent catastrophic incidents that endanger lives and the environment," said BSEE Director Brian Salerno. "However the tool is only as good as the information provided. We will need to gather input from the offshore industry on how to design a system that will yield maximum value for overall safety improvements."
The identity of individuals and companies who submit reports will be completely confidential and protected under the Confidential Information Protection and Statistical Efficiency Act, legally protecting them from disclosure and from release under the Freedom of Information Act.

The Mercosur countries have practically sealed a joint offer for a free-trade agreement with the European Union. The list provides for the elimination of import tariffs levied by the bloc in 87% of the trade volume with the Europeans, level that can reach 90%, according to the Brazilian Minister of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, Mauro Borges.

The minister said that some details that are still lacking could raise the offer to 90%. The breakthrough was achieved in the Mercosur meeting held on Wednesday in Montevideo. The final proposal is expected to be completed on the 29th, in another meeting scheduled in the Uruguayan capital among the four members of the bloc. Venezuela does not take part in the negotiations with the EU.
