Petrobras and CDP, an international organization that is a reference in emissions mapping, have entered into a partnership to encourage the company’s suppliers to measure and report their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Since last April, 500 supplier companies have been contacted by CDP to answer the questionnaire on mapping and monitoring their emissions. Participation is voluntary, but represents an opportunity to analyze management models, governance and indicators associated with the reduction of emissions of these companies.

Petrobras' adhesion to CDP's Supply Chain program aims to reinforce the company's efforts to reduce emissions in its value chain. It seeks to map indirect emissions, that is, those resulting from activities related to the production of goods and services necessary for activities and operations (scope 3).

“We believe that joining this CDP program reinforces Petrobras' commitment to reducing carbon emissions, in addition to producing a mobilizing effect in the company's value chain with hundreds of the company's suppliers", says the Executive Manager of Supplies, Goods and Services at Petrobras, Marina Quindere.

In 2021, Petrobras announced that it has the ambition to achieve neutrality of its emissions from operations in a period compatible with the Paris Agreement, signed during the COP. The company also has six emission reduction targets directly resulting from its operations (scopes 1 and 2), including the goal of reducing its absolute emissions by 25% by 2030.

"At Petrobras we have structuring actions through the Carbon Neutral Program and planned investments, which will ensure our trajectory of reducing emissions with better cost-effectiveness", explains the executive manager of Climate at Petrobras, Viviana Coelho.

The action in partnership with CDP is aligned with Petrobras' Carbon Neutral Program, which aims to accelerate the identification and development of solutions for decarbonisation of the company at the lowest cost, with performance in emissions throughout the value chain.

"We see the partnership as a great opportunity to further expand the impact of corporate commitments and actions. And with this, build management models so that the private sector can structure assertive plans to combat climate emergencies in critical sectors, "says Rebeca Lima (photo), executive director of CDP Latin America.

The 500 suppliers that will be consulted were defined based on criteria such as financial representativeness, strategic or critical categorization for the company’s business and operations, volume of emissions that can generate and risks associated with the environment, among others.

The selected companies provide products and services to all areas of the company, both operational and corporate.

Emissions reduction

The current Petrobras Strategic Plan foresees the investment of US$ 2.8 billion in the period between 2022 and 2026 to reduce and mitigate emissions, including investments in operational efficiency incorporated in projects to mitigate emissions (scopes 1 and 2), bioproducts (renewable diesel and aviation biokerosene) and research and development.
