Yesterday (08/16), the special session “Buzios Project: The Brazilian Pre-salt Super Giant” was held, in which the technologies developed to make the Búzios field viable and that led the company to receive the Distinguished Achievement Award for Companies, the world's top oil and gas industry award, for the fourth time. “This field has the largest volume of oil in Petrobras' portfolio and is also the largest deepwater oil field in the world. It occupies an area that is larger than New York City”, compared Marcio Kahn (photo), Executive Manager of Búzios, in one of the seven presentations by Petrobras executives at the session.

Marcio highlighted some of the results already achieved since April 2018, when production in the field began. "In 2020, after less than two years of operation, the Búzios field surpassed the production mark of 600,000 barrels of oil per day, due to the expressive operating results and a technical study that allowed our units to operate above their original capacity ", said. Other records mentioned by the executive were the current average production per well of 36 thousand barrels per day (with peaks of up to 70 thousand) and an accumulated production of 100 million barrels of oil equivalent achieved in just 18 months.

According to Marcio, these marks are more relevant given the complex challenges of the field, with high temperatures and pressures in the reservoirs, heterogeneous rocks that favored the loss of fluids during drilling and a very rough seabed, which made it difficult to anchor production units. “To overcome these challenges, while we were facing severe investment restrictions, we had to develop innovative technologies that would allow us to simultaneously improve productivity, safety and reduce costs,” explained Kahn, who praised the technical staff of Petrobras and other partners. “The technical expertise of our team, developed over decades of experience, was indispensable for us to achieve such incredible feats. The cooperation and collaboration with suppliers, universities and researchers were also extremely valuable and paved the way for innovation and achievements”.

The development plan for the Búzios field foresees the operation of up to 12 FPSOs (floating units that produce, store and transfer oil), reaching by the end of the decade an installed capacity exceeding 2 million barrels of oil equivalent per day. Currently, four FPSOs produce in Búzios, with the fifth unit (FPSO Almirante Barroso) at an advanced stage of construction, while the sixth (FPSO Almirante Tamandaré) is scheduled for 2024.

By celebrating the achievements and pointing out the scenario for the coming years, Petrobras reinforces, at the OTC, the solidity of its strategy and indicates the path that has been paved for its future growth.
