The Fapesp Shell Research Center for Gas Innovation (RCGI) has just promoted the launch of the book "Opportunities and Challenges for Natural Gas and Liquefied Natural Gas in Brazil". Written by Edmilson Moutinho dos Santos, professor at USP's Institute of Energy and Environment and researcher at RCGI, and by researchers Drielli Peyerl and Anna Luisa Abreu Netto, also from the Center, the work addresses several aspects of the use of natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG), which is expanding in Brazil.

LNG is obtained through the purification of natural gas. In the process, the gas is subjected to a temperature of -162 ° C and passes from the gaseous state to the liquid, facilitating its transport, previously made by pipelines. As a result, the offer and use of natural gas was expanded. In 2019, with the signing of a Term of Commitment for Cessation of Conduct between the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE) and Petrobras, the company has been taking steps to enable the use of natural gas in the country.

According to Santos, the book presents a series of measures that can be taken for the growth of natural gas in the country and discusses whether this would be a more sustainable path in terms of energy use. When exploring LNG opportunities, the work talks about the possibilities of developing other modes of transport so that the gas is distributed without pipelines. "These are recurrent themes for which the RCGI and its researchers have brought relevant answers and always deepening their research", he says. The authors also address the measures that the oil and gas industries can take to reduce their impact on climate change.

The book launching ceremony, which took place via the webinar held by the RCGI on the 9th, counted with the special participation of Décio Oddone, who was general director of the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) in December 2016 to March 2020, and is currently the CEO of ENAUTA. In his initial reflections, Oddone emphasized the importance of academia in continuing to generate high-level knowledge about the opportunities and the importance of natural gas in Brazil. However, he recalled that energy transition processes remain accelerated across the planet and the window of opportunity for natural gas may close early.

The book is available for free download, in English and Portuguese, at this link:https://www.rcgi.poli.usp.br/book-opportunities-and-challenges-of-natural-gas-and-liquefied-natural-gas-in-brazil/
