Renewable energy sources will account for about 48% of the 351 million tonnes of oil equivalent (mtoe) Brazil will be needing in 2026, says a report released last week.

According to the plan country's federal energy planning authority EPE released the Ten Year Energy Plan 2026 (PDE 2026), Brazil is expected to increase its overall installed power capacity in the National Interconnected System (SIN) by 64.1 GW to a total of 212.5 GW. Non-hydro renewables will account for about 50% of the new additions.

The table below shows Brazil's estimated renewables capacity in 2026 by plant type.

The expansion of energy supply and consumption envisaged in PDE 2026, made available for Public Consultation, meets the energy sector's stated goal in terms of the absolute value of greenhouse gas emissions in the year 2020.

Investments in the energy sector to 2026 are seen to amount to BRL 1.4 trillion. About 71.4% of that will be in oil and gas, 26.2% in electricity generation and transmission, and 2.4% in biofuels supply, the report says.
