Today (March 13), the ANP Board approved amendments to ANP Resolution No. 856/2021, which sets specifications for aviation kerosene and establishes quality control obligations for economic agents marketing these products in Brazil.

The new regulation updates the terminology for blends of fossil-based aviation kerosene (JET A or JET A-1) and synthetic blending components (SBCs), changing from the current JET C designation to the same nomenclature as fossil-based kerosene—JET A or JET A-1. The purpose is to align the specification with international standards, which already foresee the same designation (JET A or JET A-1) for the product resulting from blending fossil-based kerosene with synthetic components, ensuring compliance with fueling and aircraft requirements.

The inclusion of SBC producers as authorized blending agents introduces greater market flexibility while minimizing potential barriers to the commercialization of SBC and fossil-based JET A blends in Brazil.

With this revision, the ANP addresses requests from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and ASTM International, which highlighted that aircraft documentation does not account for the use of JET C, as aircraft are certified only for JET A or JET A-1.

During the regulatory review process leading to today’s approved resolution, production pathways, testing methods, and annex notes were updated to maintain alignment between Brazilian regulations and international standards.
