Rolls-Royce has won a contract to deliver a unique package of advanced ship equipment for a new offshore construction vessel currently being built in Turkey for the Norwegian ship owner Volstad Shipping AS. The contract is worth approximately £13.5 million to Rolls-Royce.
The package includes the new Unified Bridge from Rolls-Royce, and the first commercial delivery of tunnel-thrusters powered by permanent magnet (PM) technology. The Permanent Magnet tunnel thruster is a new addition to the Rolls-Royce family of thrusters, building on a completely new approach to thruster design and motor integration. The TT-PM meets the strictest requirements for performance, noise and vibration.
In addition Rolls-Royce will deliver azimuth-thrusters, engines, dynamic positioning, automation, navigation, drives, switchboards and electric motors.
John Knudsen, Rolls-Royce, President Offshore: “Volstad Shipping will receive a vessel that incorporates innovative technology from the control centre at the top with the Unified Bridge, down to the very latest thruster technology below the waterline. Our offshore team has worked closely with the ship owner and designer to develop the advanced equipment and features on this vessel.”
The vessel is 125 meters long and is designed with ice class for operations in Arctic waters. It is a ST-259 design by Skipsteknisk and is under construction in Turkey. It will be delivered from the Tersan Shipyard in the second half of 2015.
