President Dilma Rousseff declared that Brazil pledges to slash greenhouse gases emission by 37% by 2025, and 43% by 2030. It was announced on Sunday (Sep. 27) at the United Nations Conference on the Post-2015 Development Agenda in New York. According to her, the targets are based on a reference year of 2005.

In her address, Rousseff pointed out that the numbers will be brought to the Climate Conference in Paris as commitment took on by the Brazilian government. "The Paris Conference is a unique opportunity to shape a common response to the global challenge of climate change. Brazil has made great efforts to reduce greenhouse gases emissions, not compromising our economic development and our social inclusion. "

The president also mentioned what she claim to be ambitious goals for the energy sector, especially to guarantee 45% of renewable sources in the total amount of energy mix. She said that worldwide the average goal is 13%.

Rousseff also announced the participation of 66% of water source in electricity generation; the participation of 23% from renewable sources: wind, solar and biomass; an increase of about 10% in electrical efficiency; and the participation of 16% of fuel ethanol and other sources derived from sugarcane in the total energy mix.

About the intention to crack down illegal deforestation by 2030, the president added that the goal can be achieved earlier. "Through the country's and society's efforts, we can bring it forward."

But according to Rousseff, to achieve this goal we need to have enforcement actions and encourage activities that do not destroy the environment.

"The necessary adjustments against climate change are being followed by important changes in the use of land and forests areas, in agriculture, energy production and consumption patterns," she reported. "Brazil is one of the few developing countries to commit to an absolute goal for emissions reduction. In spite of having one of the largest populations and GDPs in the world, our goals are just as ambitious, if not more so, than those set by developed countries," she added.
