The sanitation companies registered the largest migration of loads to the free energy market among all the sectors monitored by the Electric Energy Trading Chamber - CCEE in the last year. In July, the segment registered 324 consumer units qualified to trade in the Free Contracting Environment - ACL, a volume 75% higher than that presented in the same month of 2019.

Next in the ranking of migrations is trade, which also represents the sector with the highest number of cargoes on the free market, 6,246 in July this year. Compared to last year, the presence of the commercial sector increased by 41%. The service, non-metallic minerals, transportation, food and miscellaneous manufactured segments also rose significantly.

The data, already consolidated, are present in the Monthly InfoMercado for July 2020, released by the Electric Energy Trading Chamber - CCEE from the accounting of settlements and operations in the Short Term Market - MCP.

Consumption

Energy consumption in July increased by 0.8% in the annual comparison, from 60,374 average MW to 60,847 average MW. The regulated market decreased by 0.7%, to 40,848 average MW, while the free market increased by 3.9%, to 20,000 average MW. Excluding the effects of migration, the scenario is reversed, with consumption 2.2% higher in the regulated market and 2.2% lower in the free market.

The reduction in energy consumption in the ACL, excluding the effect of the migration of new cargo, is explained by the drop in consumption in nine of the 15 branches of activity. Among these falls, we highlight: services (-22%), vehicles (-17%), transportation (-13%), textiles (-9%). On the other hand, the sectors that showed growth were: beverages (9%), sanitation (7%), non-metallic minerals (5%), food (5%) and chemicals (3%).

The CCEE also verified the transaction of 139 thousand average MW of energy contracts, 65% of which related to the free market and with an emphasis on 258 average MW destined for export.

Generation

In July, power generation in the National Interconnected System (SIN) increased by 0.8% compared to the same month in 2019 - 60,919 average MW against 60,416 average MW, respectively. There was an increase in all energy sources, except thermal, which fell by 34.2%. In this group, however, biomass thermal plants increased by 4.6% in the month. The fuel generated 4,514 average MW and represented just over half of the thermoelectric generation verified in July.

Photovoltaics advanced 34% and wind power increased 12.5% in the month.

Know more

Free market - environment where the consumer can choose the energy supplier, as well as the contracting conditions, either directly with the generator or with an energy trader. The contracting is done bilaterally or through auctions for the sale of energy promoted by generators or traders. It is also known for its free contracting environment (ACL) jargon.

Regulated market - environment where the consumer has the energy management done by the distributor to which he is connected. It is also known for its regulated contracting environment (ACR), with auctions held by the government.

Energy trader - agent authorized to mediate energy purchase and sale transactions between generators and consumers of energy, among other transactions.

Free consumer - is the one who contracts energy in the free market, without any restriction of energy source, with a load above 2 MW.

Special consumer - one who contracts energy on the free market, provided it is generated from renewable sources (wind, solar, small hydroelectric plants and biomass or biogas plants), with a load above 0.5 MW. The energy acquired by special consumers is known in the sector as incentive energy, because it guarantees discounts on the use of energy transportation systems (transmission or distribution).
