It's never been more important to talk about the environment. In times of social isolation, the world increasingly seems to realize that if we don't take care of our planet now, future generations will have a big problem to deal with. In 2021, World Environment Day will be celebrated, once again, amidst the pandemic.

The date, instituted by the UN in 1972, during the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, in Stockholm, is celebrated every June 5th. The main objective is to draw the population's attention to environmental problems. And more than that: warning about the importance of preserving natural resources.

Taking advantage of the date to rethink our daily habits is a good way to take the first step. "Small attitudes are solely and exclusively up to us, in our daily lives, rethinking our habits and with the desire to do something with the preservation of the environment in mind. These small desires for change often end up having a catalyzing power for transformation" , encourages the specialist in domestic waste management, Rafael Zarvos, founder of Oceano Gestão de Resíduos.

According to Zarvos, the pandemic served as a warning for the population to understand the importance of taking care of the environment. "The 20th century was a period of unprecedented ecological changes, with drastic reductions in natural ecosystems and biodiversity. The destruction directly affects our survival. Every 4 months an infectious disease appears in humans, 75% of these diseases are from animals To prevent further outbreaks, the illegal trade in wild animals and the destruction of their habitats must stop," he suggests.

The specialist takes the opportunity to talk about some tips and good practices that can positively impact the environment. "Turning off the faucet while brushing your teeth, taking shorter showers, opting for eco-friendly products, using non-disposable cups and straws are attitudes that may seem small, but they are already a big step," says Rafael.

"We must remember that we do not have plan B.. We are reaching the depletion of natural resources. Our great challenge is to balance population growth and, consequently, the increase in demand for goods and sustainability. The path goes through a change in our behavior and valuing the circular economy", he concludes.
