The 168-MW El Cortijo wind farm in Mexico is now under construction and is planned to start operation in August 2018, Spain’s Acciona SA (BME:ANA) said Thursday.

Acciona Energia has started construction on the USD-221-million (EUR 210m) park in Tamaulipas state. It will comprise 56 turbines of 3 MW each, supplied by German wind turbine maker Nordex (ETR:NDX1), which acquired Acciona Windpower last year.

The Spanish company won the right to sell 585.5 GWh of electric power and the corresponding clean energy certificates in Mexico’s first energy auction after the reform. El Cortijo is the power plant that will produce the power and the certificates.

The wind farm will produce as much power as 350,000 Mexican households consume.

Acciona said it will start construction on another Mexican project, the 339-MWp Puerto Libertad photovoltaic (PV) complex in Sonora, in the next few months. A portion of the output will go to satisfy commitments by the company in Mexico’s second wholesale electricity market auction, while the rest will be sold under a power purchase agreement (PPA) with a unit of the Tuto Energy Group.

With these two projects, Acciona will reach 1,063 MW of capacity under operation in Mexico by the second half of 2018. This includes 68% wind and 32% PV.
