According to the latest Innovative Workplaces Brazil data, an annual survey conducted by MIT Technology Review, which annually selects the most innovative companies in our country, the segment of Brazilian energy-related companies has the lowest innovation index compared to the overall average. On a scale ranging from 0 to 5, the corporations in the sector scored 4.08 compared to the overall average of 4.14. The only score higher than the sector's was in the area of management and culture (4.41).

To arrive at these results, the survey analyzed seven perspectives of corporate innovation capacity, which are: management; products/services; marketing/sales; processes; diversity; data decisioning; and open innovation. The 20 most innovative companies receive the Innovative Workplaces Brazil seal, which is MIT Technology Review Brazil's endorsement for the most innovative companies in the country. Corporations that have received this endorsement include Hospital Albert Einstein, iFood, Lojas Renner, Vibra Energy, among others.

According to André Micelli (pictured), CEO of MIT Technology Review Brazil, there are several factors contributing to the sector receiving this low index. "What we've noticed is that innovation has not yet been institutionalized in the segment. Firstly, because these initiatives require very high investment, and secondly, because those conducting research are associated with academia and universities, a sector that generally has a very large gap from the market," he comments.

Check out the other scores:

Overall: 4.08, 4.14

Management and culture: 4.41, 4.38

Processes: 3.82, 3.86

Marketing and sales: 4.09, 4.23

Products and services: 4.05, 4.25

Diversity: 4.08, 4.19

Data decisioning: 3.97, 3.98

Open Innovation: 4.15, 4.11

Despite this scenario, Brazil was the third country in the world to attract the most investments in renewable energy in 2023, totaling over $25 billion, according to data from the Energy Transition Investment Trends 2024 report, ranking only behind China and the United States.

According to the CEO of MIT Tech Review Brazil, although there are large corporations that have areas dedicated exclusively to new technologies, most still use innovations developed in other countries and focus on seeking models that help modify only their sales and marketing processes, rather than the way energy is generated.

Possible paths to develop sector innovation

In June, companies in this sector will have the opportunity to attend a global event on the energy sector that could recommend paths to develop innovative capacity.

From June 17th to 19th, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, the Energy Summit 2024 will be held, the world's leading event on innovation and entrepreneurship in sustainable energy. Organized in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the expectation is that more than 10,000 people will participate during the three days of programming, including representatives from companies, governments, universities, as well as entrepreneurs and investors interested in following the main news and debates on the next steps related to energy and sustainability worldwide.

According to Hudson Mendonça, CEO of the Energy Summit, the event will position our country even more as a protagonist in the global discussion on energy transition for the next 10 years. "We will have the opportunity to bring together all the leaders and experts from the different areas of the global energy sector and compile a report that will have as its backdrop the question 'where do we want to be in the next 10 years,' and will also point out paths that we can take in the next 12 months," he comments.

There will be over 70 hours of content, more than 30 speakers, 5,000m² of exhibition area, as well as plenty of networking and numerous business opportunities.
